In your first session, you can expect it to be focused on the therapist getting to know you and setting a foundation for your therapeutic relationship.
Below is a breakdown of what generally occurs.
Your therapist will begin by introducing themselves and explaining the rules of confidentiality; when they must keep things private and any situations where they might be legally required to share information (i.e. if someone is in immediate danger).
Your therapist will ask questions to understand why you’re seeking therapy, your background, and any relevant family, work, or relationship dynamics. They might inquire about your mental and physical health history to gain a full picture. It’s like putting a puzzle together.
You’ll discuss what you hope to achieve in therapy. This may include specific goals or areas you want to work on, such as managing anxiety, improving relationships, or navigating life transitions.
Bringing a list of specific topics to discuss may be helpful.
You’ll have time to ask questions and share any concerns.
Toward the end of the session, your therapist will discuss the treatment plan; this includes frequency of sessions for optimal relief- weekly, bi-weekly, or once a month. They will also summarize key points from this initial conversation.
